UNESCO is a toothless tiger, Kalpana. For a number of years now, they have no funds and are dependent on host governments to foot the expenses for their travel and accommodation to heritage sites that are usually in remote areas. So obviously they can never exert any pressure of any kind. Sometimes I feel we should not have bothered about Champaner at all and focussed attention on it -- it might have been in a better condition.

Sandhya, such a fabulous post on the need for preservation in India. RIGHT ON! I've been so mad about this. Let's look to Singapore to learn the importance of preservation. The same British colonial and other landmarks of the same time period—whether its Raffles, or the Victoria concert hall, or the Central Fire Station, Koon-seng Road, the Blair Road shophouses, EVERYTHING is respected and preserved. Heritage is A BIG THING. I'm told I cannot compare India with Singapore. I know that. But it's an attitude and that's what has not changed. LOVED Champaner. I'm so glad that in 2011, Rahul thought to take me to the beautiful Champaner!!!! Many fond memories of that day. I wrote a post about it. I'll fish it out and share.
